If you are wearing a korowai, it should be worn over the gown and under the degree hood or diploma stole. The korowai (Maori cloak) was a garment made in early Maori times and was generally woven or made from traditional materials like flax and feathers. It is worn as a mantle of prestige and honor. Everyone has different reasons for wearing Korowai on their graduation day whether it be, a sense of identity, a graduation acknowledgement, a congratulatory gift, a connection to our NZ heritage or family tradition. If you wish to buy a Korowai, we suggest you contact the craftspeople at Puti Design. These stunning cloaks look great on graduation day, and make a fantastic family heirloom. The cloaks come with an export certificate should you wish to take them overseas. The cloaks come in four colours, and are hand made to your requirements. There is a significant amount of work involved with each Korowai and we understand the leadtime can be up to 6 weeks. |
